Scenes Around the Area

We see the most interesting, unique and fun things around Cheboygan and in  surrounding areas.  Just thought we would post these for when we look back and remember knowing that these pictures will evoke a feeling, a thought or a person.

Right in the heart of town on Main Street.  Apparently this is the proper way to pronounce the name of the town we live in.  It is an Indian name meaning "Passing Through" and refers to the days that Indians (or more properly stated according to our son-in-law, Fred "Native Americans") passed through during their fur trading days using the Inland Route to Mackinaw Island, instead of the straits passage.  Cheboygan was first settled in 1845.

The Cheboygan Lighthouse on Lake Huron at the north point of the city.  Lighthouses use a variety of colors and signals to communicate with mariners, including fixed lights, range lights, and light characteristics.  Fixed lights burn steadily and can be red or green to provide directional information.   Range lights are two fixed lights of different elevations that are about half a nautical mile apart.  The navigator steers the ship to keep the lights aligned vertically.  Some lighthouses use light characteristics-- series of flashes and colors-- that identify the lighthouse to mariners.  Ship captains can use the frequency, color, and duration of the flashes to determine their location relative to land.

Most of the towns around this area post banners of their citizens who have served in different branches of the military.  This picture shows an example on Main Street in Cheboygan.  They also all have pretty (even if fake) flowers hanging from poles.

One day last week, Main Street was lined with 25-30 old fashioned cars.  I believe they were just passing through because they were here during the lunch hour and then gone.  It was fun to see mostly older couples driving through town enjoying their lives.

Elder Gibbons has never said he'd like to have one of those old cars shown above, but he has said several times that he would love to have an old fire truck and use them in parades to bring joy to people... can't figure out how to ship one home.

We went to go drop off something at a family's home.  I'm confused... Do they want us to be there or not?  Welcome?  Or No Trespassing.  Beware of the Dog?

Fudge is very popular here in Northern Michigan.  We had to try some when we passed through Mackinaw City last week.  It was good, but to be honest, not worth the price.  But at least we can say we tried it.

It is not usual to see baby chicks in a box in people's kitchen here.  they warm them until they are big enough to be put outside.  When we stopped at this home, their teenage boy ran inside to get this little chicken that he said was just born that day.  I don't know what is sweeter.  The little chicken or the smile on Hunter's face.
